Biography

Early Life

Tawnicia Ferguson Rowan is a native of Miami, Florida. She is connected to her roots and community. From an early age, she aspired to give back to her hometown. This shaped her academic and professional journey. She attended two historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Spelman College. Her academic path continued at Vanderbilt University. There she obtained a Master of Arts in English Literature. This gave her a strong foundation in the humanities. 

She blends her love for literature with her spiritual calling. Ferguson Rowan pursued a Master of Divinity degree from ITC.  It stands for the Interdenominational Theological Center. It fosters leadership within the African American religious community. She pursued her education at diverse schools.  They are both historically significant institutions. They instilled in her a deep understanding of her cultural heritage. They gave her the tools to serve and uplift others. Her background is rooted in Black academic and theological traditions. It empowers her ongoing commitment to her community. It strengthens her role as both an educator and a spiritual leader.

Religious Faith & Activism

Tawnicia Ferguson Rowan’s religious faith and activism are entwined. She is dedicated to education and womanist thought. She is also dedicated to spiritual activism. She has built a career in academia and ministry. She uplifts and empowers marginalized communities. Rowan has over 20 years of higher education experience.  Rowan teaches at Florida Memorial University.  She is a professor of English as well as Religion and Philosophy there. She and her husband James first joined the University Truth Center in 1999.  She worked and was licensed at the Universal Truth Center in 2022. She currently serves in the Adult Education Ministry there.  The Universal Truth Center is located in Miami Gardens, Florida. Womanist theology is central to her teaching and activism. It explores the intersections of race, gender, and faith.  

Rowan is the founder of Well-Written Words, LLC. It is a writing, editing, and consulting company. She is a contributing author to Women of Color Pray: Voices of Strength, Faith, Healing, Hope, and Courage. In this work she weaves the voices of African American women together.  It offers broad theological and social justice discussions. Rowan holds a leadership role in the Universal Foundation for Better Living. She is also on the DEI Board of Unity World Headquarters. DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  She creates inclusive spiritual and educational spaces. There, the experiences of marginalized people are honored.

Rowan is a part of the Princeton Theological Seminary’s Black Theology and Leadership Institute. She advocates for the voices and experiences of women of color in ministry. Her work is not limited to the United States. She is part of a national network.  It ensures that future religious leadership is diverse. It seeks to include the strengths of communities of color. Throughout her career, she has bridged gaps in spiritual literacy and education. She believes in the power of faith to inspire change and healing. She works toward healing of individuals and communities alike.
